HAAS® Alarm 129 — M-FIN TIMEOUT — SPINDLE NOT AT SPEED

What it means
The control commanded a spindle speed and waited for the spindle to confirm it had reached it. The confirmation never arrived within the timeout. Often happens during rigid tapping.
Common causes
- Spindle taking too long to spin up under load
- Vector drive issue — spindle never reached the commanded RPM
- M-fin signal lost (control didn't see the 'I'm at speed' confirmation)
- Encoder fault feeding back wrong RPM
What to check first
- Check the spindle load meter — is it pulling more current than expected?
- Confirm the actual RPM on the display matches what you commanded
- If it happens during rigid tapping specifically, the spindle encoder needs checking
Prevention
Most spindle alarms have one of two root causes: heat or load. A clean cabinet with working fans, sensible cutting parameters, and a regular spindle warm-up cycle (especially on cold mornings) prevents the majority of spindle issues. If your spindle load gradually creeps up across a long production run, replace the cutter sooner rather than later.
