HAAS® Alarm 116 — SPINDLE ORIENTATION FAULT

What it means
The spindle was asked to orient (stop in a precise rotational position, e.g. for a tool change or M19) and failed to do it within the time limit.
Common causes
- Spindle encoder or sensor fault
- Drive belt slipping (older mills)
- Vector drive parameter problem
- Mechanical drag preventing slow precise positioning
What to check first
- Try the orient again — sometimes a one-off
- On belt-driven spindles, check belt condition and tension
- Persistent fault is usually encoder or vector drive — service call
Prevention
Most spindle alarms have one of two root causes: heat or load. A clean cabinet with working fans, sensible cutting parameters, and a regular spindle warm-up cycle (especially on cold mornings) prevents the majority of spindle issues. If your spindle load gradually creeps up across a long production run, replace the cutter sooner rather than later.
