HAAS® Alarm 103 — X SERVO ERROR TOO LARGE

What it means
The X axis can't keep up with the position the control is asking it to be in. The gap between commanded and actual position has grown too big — known as following error.
Common causes
- Mechanical binding (chips packed in way covers, debris in guides, crashed axis)
- Damaged ballscrew, bearing or coupling
- Encoder cable fault or damaged feedback line
- Servo parameters out of tune after a service or board swap
- Aggressive feed rates or rapid moves with a heavy table
What to check first
- Power off — try moving the X axis by hand. It should move smoothly with no tight spots
- Inspect way covers and ballscrew for chips, debris or damage
- Check the X axis encoder cable for pinching or contamination
- Reduce rapid override to 25% and try a gentle jog
Prevention
Following errors are often a slow-creeping problem before they become an alarm. Keep an eye on the axis load meters during normal production — if one axis is consistently working harder than it used to, get it looked at before it trips. Way cover seal replacement and ballscrew lubrication are the cheapest insurance you can buy.
