HAAS® Alarm 253 — TOOL OFFSET OUT OF RANGE

What it means
A tool length, tool wear, or work offset value is outside what the control considers reasonable. Often a typo or units mix-up (mm vs inch).
Common causes
- Decimal point in the wrong place when entering an offset
- Inch/metric mismatch (e.g. 12.5 entered when machine is in inch)
- Tool wear value cumulatively grew large after many adjustments
- Macro calculated and wrote a bad value
What to check first
- Open the offsets table and look for any value that looks wildly out of place
- Check the units the machine is currently in
- Reset any obviously bad values; remeasure if needed
Prevention
Programming alarms are best prevented at the post-processor and verification stages. Always verify a new program in single-block mode with rapid override at 5–10% before committing to a full run. Keep a small library of tested macros rather than rewriting logic each job — and comment your variables clearly so the next person (or future-you) can read them.
